What is IUI, and Who is it For?

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is the process of placing prepared sperm directly into the female uterus at the correct time of the menstrual cycle to try to achieve a pregnancy. The fallopian tubes must be open for the treatment to work, so IUI is suitable if no other fertility issues are present. This treatment may be recommended to heterosexual patients who have been trying to conceive but do not want IVF, or those who have difficulties with sexual intercourse. It may also be beneficial in cases of mild sperm issues, as sperm preparation helps isolate the healthiest sperm. Women with ovulation issues may also benefit.

IUI with donor sperm can be offered to various patient groups, including couples where the male partner has no sperm in the ejaculate or carries a transmissible genetic condition, single women, or female same-sex couples.
