Unknown sperm donation refers to the process in which an individual or a couple utilises sperm from a donor whose personal identity is undisclosed. This can involve sperm obtained from a sperm bank or a similar facility.

How Does Unknown Sperm Donation Work

The unknown sperm donation process initiates with an evaluation of the potential donor’s eligibility through consultations and medical evaluations. Comprehensive counselling is mandatory for both donors and recipients, accompanied by the completion of consent forms for the donation and reception of sperm. The sperm is frozen and subjected to a quarantine period lasting a minimum of three months. Following this period, the donor undergoes additional blood tests to confirm the safety of the frozen sperm for treatment purposes.

Donor sperm can be used in IVF/ICSI or IUI, depending on the medical history of the recipient/s. For both treatment options, the donor sperm is thawed and prepared in the laboratory. In the case of IUI, the prepared sperm is introduced into the woman’s womb around the time of ovulation, whilst for IVF/ICSI the eggs are collected and fertilised in the laboratory with the prepared sperm.
