What is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a procedure in which a patient’s eggs are harvested from their ovaries, frozen, and stored for future use.

How Egg Freezing Works

Within an egg freezing cycle, the patient will take fertility drugs to stimulate their ovaries to produce more eggs. The eggs are then collected under conscious sedation for comfort. The eggs are examined under a microscope to assess their maturity, as only mature eggs can be frozen. Mature eggs are vitrified (a form of freezing) and stored. At a later date, the eggs can be thawed, injected with sperm to create embryos (using ICSI), and transferred to the womb to attempt pregnancy.

Importance of Egg Freezing

Egg freezing may be considered for both social and medical reasons. For example, a patient may wish to preserve fertility because starting a family is not a current consideration, or because they will undergo medical treatment that might affect fertility in the future.
